At the North Peace Museum stands a Historic Mile 47 Post and beside it the information on the Mile 0 Controversy. The plaque shows a photo of Captain Solomon Gosman posing at the Mile 0 Post sign near Fort St John in 1942. To many Dawson Creek BC is known as Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway but Fort St John was the headquarters for the southern section of the construction of the highway. There are those who have said that the soldiers and contractors and equipment arrived in Dawson Creek by rail, as it was the end of steel at that time, and then were sent towards Fort St John.
